Ok, so you know how much I love clogs, right? Then what could be better for me than CLOG BOOTS! I love these booties so much--they are warm, comfortable, versatile (the cuff can be turned up) and weather-proof. They were a bit over my budget; but so worth it!

I'm hearing that Fluoro colors will be in again this year--not that it makes that much difference to me. I will wear them anyway. Especially in the doldrums of winter. Must cheer myself up.

Crew, and I saw another rendition of it at Express. The even weirder part? I can do many renditions of this with OTHER clothing in my closet of the same colors! Be forewarned......

Has anyone seen the "Fotoshop" video on Youtube? Well, I have a dirty little secret. I did it. Yup. I photo-shopped this picture. I have to confess--IT FELT SO GOOD! It was just a little ~~wrinkle~~ shadow on my forehead that was very distracting. It was the way the sun was hitting my face. Really. Sooo much cheaper than botox.....

I know it's sort of trite, but dressing is moody. And just like a song that gets stuck in your head, I kept hearing the Osmond's lyrics play over and over again as I was looking through these pictures. I just couldn't help myself and post them! (Course I could have done a more extreme version of Rock 'n Roll; but we'll save that for another day.)

It took me HOURS to put the little text bubbles on my photos working in Photoshop! The collage was done in Picassa, and took me no time at all. All of these photos were taken with my old camera. New camera photos may begin on Thursday....

I Can Still Wear Shoes!

I am so glad I can still wear shoes! (or low boots as the case may be..) We are in a snow drought; yeah!

I wove this necklace around a scarf--I couldn't decide which one to wear so I wore both.

And I like the mix of plaids--with these neutral shades, it's so much easier than mixing the brightly colored prints that I have.

Color Theory Thoughts

I could never figure out why, growing up, that pink and red were such a no-no. Pink is red tinted; if you were a painter, you would be adding white to red. So what was the big deal?

I think this so-called offbeat color combo gives this long skirt some funk. And I think long skirts need funk--otherwise it can be a voyage into old-lady-land. This skirt is gorgeous though. The wool fabric drapes well and is of high quality. And yes, that's another body suit underneath--hey, it is a great layering piece!

Going a Bit Too Far?

I've probably gone too far. Not only do I have this very unusual jacket, but I really went over the top with the short skirt, the textured stockings and the high, white boots. Forgive me but I JUST HAD TO DO IT! I knew it was (sort-of) wrong, but sometimes I need to break out--and what better time than Visible Monday!

And would you like the skinny on my experience with microderm? I worked at a spa, and for about a year and a half I got it for free! The aesthetician was fantastic but for me it was a bit too much. (A bit like this outfit, LOL!) The concept of removing the dead skin cells is a sound one--but as I don't have any skin concerns (i.e. acne, rosacia ), a gycolic peel works just fine for me. And microderm is expensive. I would recommend the lesser of the 2 extremes, the peels, before going for the full monty.

Two things I want to share with you today: first--I'm going to LOVE this tunic vest! It's a wonderful material, the kind that flows over your shape, is soft and warm, and keeps it's shape. The material is sort of like a wool terri--it has a little nap on the outside. On the inside ( you can see a little on the lapel) is more like a flannel. It will match up with all of my leggings--a nice addition to my wardrobe!

Secondly, I wanted to share with you my experience in working at a skin care spa. One of the things I learned is that the skin care products at the department stores are probably the WORST bang for your buck. I used to buy Estee Lauder and Chanel, to name a few. The medical grade or specialty brands just sold to aestheticians are probably a better investment. That's not to say I use the more expensive ones exclusively; I mix the high end with the lower end--my trusted drug store brands.

For example, for my moisturizer, I like one that does double duty; moisturizer with peptides and sunscreen. On the low end, I love Oil of Olay (oh yes, my aesthetician would be cringing right now). On the higher end, the Hydro-Peptide in the blue bottle. The last one on the right is a serum--just a straight moisturizer--and more on that later.

Would you like to know about micro-derm abrasion???? I have first hand experience!

Stylish yet Sensible Shoes?

Why, Why, Why???? Why are the hardly any cute, stylish, low-heeled shoes lately??? While I was getting dressed this morning, I was looking for the funk for this outfit. (yes, that's what I do--look for the funk) I was completely satisfied with it all, although it was rather conservative for me--the blazer, the longer skirt and the grey stockings. I would have loved some funkier shoes...

Instead, I had to settle for these babies--that I have all but worn out this season because they are the only shoes that fit the clunkier style this year. And the only shoes that I won't kill myself in. All those funky shoes in the stores have 4" heels! All my other shoes are more refined but alas, look dated to me.

More experimenting with Photoshop--too bad they don't have a "bad hair" editing tool.

What can we do, fellow bloggers, to remedy this situation? Is there such a thing as stylish but sensible in a shoe? Any ideas?

A Real Mash-up

This is the start of my day. I'm coming outside to take my outfit-of-the-day photos before I go to work. This is my front door and this porch can be a nice warm place to take photos in the cooler weather.

The trouble with my front porch is the light can be really bright; consequently the colors of my clothes can become distorted. I was lucky today--these colors look true. How many pictures did I have to take? I only have the patience and the time for about a half a dozen photos. If they don't come out well, I have to wait until another day.

Having a lot of fun with Photoshop though! I used this "copper" effect for the background in this picture. The program is a bit tough to learn, and although I have used it in the past, I am finding I have to re-learn it all over again. I am looking forward to sharing some cool photos with you!

Oh, and don't you love the mix of the glen plaid wool with this gold lame skirt? It's a real mash-up of colors and textures.

Do you take your pictures in the same place every day? Do you keep taking pictures until you get the "right shot"?

Seasonal Transitions

The transition from fall to winter. For me, it means a lot of mixing of summer and winter textures and colors. It means hanging onto every last bit of color and brightness that I can muster up. It means, mixing tights/socks and sandals, wool sweaters and cotton skirts or vice-versa.

I particularly like mixing the socks and sandals thing. I expanded it to tights and shooties. I feel like I am cheating winter a bit by sneaking in my sandals so late in the season. Tee-hee.

And we have already gotten a dusting of snow. It's a long season so if I can delay it a bit, hooray for me!

Sparkles

What am I going to wear today? It has to be one of the most burning questions of the day. (That and what's for dinner?) Sometimes the answer comes to me in the form of a vision. I know, I know, I sound crazy, but it's the right side of my brain--the more creative side--talking to me. Today it was in the form of a voice (yup, I hear voices too). It said, "sparkles".

So I went in my closet and found a sparkly top--that was easy, I don't have that many. I went for a monochromatic look; I thought it might balance the sparkly a bit.

All of that brought me about to another burning question: Why do girls like sparkles? It's almost innate. And I don't mean why we like them now--I mean like anthropologically speaking. Like cave women. Why should we be attracted to sparkles? Anyone want to venture a guess?

Oh, and how perfect are the sparkles for VISIBLE MONDAY?

Same but Different

I'm back girlfriends! Yup, the computer went KAPUT--but now I'm back and just in time for my birthday. And for the first time in (gulp) FIFTY-SEVEN YEARS--there are still leaves on the trees on November 16th! Never have I seen this before. Sort of refreshing, in a nothing-stays-the-same type of way.

Those Darn Colored Tights Again

I love surprises in clothing. Like the splash of a color or an offbeat shape. Call me crazy; I guess it's the artist in me.

And you know what is even crazier? I felt empowered in these red tights. Yup--you heard it right. EMPOWERED. I don't know exactly why; maybe it's because the red really makes my legs stand out--certainly one of my better features. Or maybe it's the confidence that I have to wear them. Or the little bit of cheekiness I get I kick out of.

Tips on Fur Vests

Before I forget, I just wanted to share with you my tips on finding a fur vest. I got this one last year, but they are still out in full force this year too. If you decide to take the plunge, here's what I have found:

Full length ones are very bulky--warm, but bulky
I look for tailoring and shape; lest one looks like a polar bear
Fur trim is another way to get the look but not the bulk
Partial fur is good too; this one only has fur on the front--knit on the back

This vest works--it's short and fairly tailored--although I will be putting some other fasteners on it. The knitted back helps to keep the volume down. I've tried on a lot of fur vests and most of the time I feel like a little kid with a snow-suit on.

And I think I finally got the earring shot! Although, it doesn't capture the sparkle of the earrings, but I think you get the idea~

What do you think of the fur vest trend? Is it a yay or a nay?

Elusive Photo Skills

Hard to believe its getting to the point where I am forced to take pictures inside--or endure the cold! After reviewing some pictures taken outside last week, I was looking TOO COLD, if you know what I mean. And thank-God we dodged the bullet from the weekend Nor'easter and didn't get FEET of snow!

Ah, yes--the outfit! I was feeling sparkly today. Not a common feeling for me, by any means. Somehow sparkly flashes me back to sequin appliques of the 80's. Shopping in my closet, I dug up this old skirt from Christmas past, paired it with a Halloween sweater and had to don the boots--regrettably! Although I think the boots work well with the skirt, no?

My last photography class is this week, and I have concluded that my camera on auto is more skilled than I am. I'm trying to get good earring portraits but they seem to be ever-so elusive. It doesn't help that I take my pictures in the morning as I am flying out the door to go to work. Will you be patient with me while I develop some more skill?

Oh, and I think this is a great outfit for Visible Monday--don't you?

Big Poncho, Little Poncho

I was getting pretty tired of my clothes this year. That's not to say I didn't like them anymore--I still loved my clothes. I just needed to shake them up, look at them from another perspective, inject some freshness into my look.

With that in mind, I've been playing with proportions--if you recall, I tried the new "New Look" with its full skirt and peplum top. While shopping, I noticed other new proportions this season, like the poncho sweaters, and cape-like tops. What better way to change it up?

I can't tell you how perfect this poncho sweater is! It falls gracefully over the tummy. The sleeves, which may have created a flopping problem, work because there are small sleeves from the elbow down. The only drawback? With all that fullness, it's hard to get a regular coat to fit over the sleeves.

That's what is so wonderful about this BIGGER poncho--I can fit my smaller poncho under it! So I guess I'm double ponchoing it today.....

Are new proportions something you like to play with or do you like sticking with the tried and true? Do you feel like some of the new proportions are "too young"?

Essential List for Early Fall

I think I have made note recently regarding all of the above items except for the bodysuits. Bodysuits, do you remember them? A good and useful item to resurrect from the past. I love this piece for layering; it's thin and stays put. A bit hard to find lately--I have to search, but I tend to find them at dance stores. It is best under skirts; no visible lines which may show under pants.

So, do you still wear bodysuits or have you passed them over along with bell-bottoms?

Zen Blogging

I would like to imagine a blogging world in which I could do zen blogging. I wouldn't have to update my Facebook page, tweet and re-tweet my most recent posts, and constantly do the uncomfortable task of self-promotion. A quieter world.

Real or Synthetic?

For Visible Monday hosted by Patti over at Not Dead Yet Style, I wanted to share with you my go-to outfit on my day off. It tends to consist of leggings, tunic top and blazer for fall. I've had this tunic for at least 5 years now and it is a staple.

The tunic is silk, these leggings are denim (aka JEGGINGS) but the jacket is, sorry to say, plastic. Yup. Some type of imitation leather that is surprisingly soft. It is really incredible the fabrics that are created from synthetic materials lately--all the faux furs and faux leathers. Must be easier on those poor little animals.

And the shooties are also synthetic leather, yet very pliable. Not the stiff plastic of yesteryear. I can hardly tell the difference from the real thing; even the inside is fake suede!

As much as I am a real fabric type of girl, I am slowly going to the other side. How about you? Do you only go real or do you go synthetic?

Down by the River

Very rarely is the water in the river this calm. The recent Anthropologie catalog inspired me to shoot on the dock.

Of course, THEIR dock didn't have bird turds all over it like mine did. I had to find a corner that was do-do free. Don't you find that your fashion shoot is different from the magazines? HOW do they do that???

With the cooler weather, the layers are coming on and I'm not quite comfortable with them yet. It's tricky to layer and not to feel like you put on 20 pounds. This sweater is perfect for layering, its very thin, but the vest--with it's pockets on the bust, make me feel inflated. I need to wear stockings but my skirt must be lined otherwise my stockings are sticking to the skirt all day long.

And so it begins......

Washing Blazers by Hand?

I had a hippie friend that swore you could wash blazers by hand. I didn't believe it. I was always afraid to risk it, but as a few of my better blazers aged--I found I didn't have much to loose. I tried it.

This blazer was my first try and I am very pleased! As long as the manufacturer pre-shrinks all the fabrics, I think you are safe. But you never know. Just like one of those pieces you take to the cleaners and it returns not the same size.....

Back to the outfit. I love the colors--the blue in the chambray shirt is actually more saturated. And you may know by now--one of my favorite shoes for the season? CLOGS!

Just a great all-weather shoe. Do I sound too utilitarian?

Oh, and I almost forgot! How appropriate that we had torrential rains earlier in the week, so I can show Patti over at Not Dead Yet Style what I wear in the rain! Happy Visible Monday!

Transitional Shooties

When Tammy posted her Trending through the Decades subject, boots, I wasn't prepared. The last thing I want to wear now is boots. Here in New England, we wear boots (not the pretty, high heeled kind, no-- the ugly mucky muck kind) for what seems like 6 months. So, the thought of bringing out my boots before their time was ......revolting.

I remembered I have this OTHER type of boot--shootie--half shoe, half bootie. When I bought these on sale from Anthroplogie, it was an experiment. Was I going to be able to wear them?
As it has turned out, I wear these A LOT! They are so much more practical than I could ever have imagined--they are a great transitional boot. And not the mucky-muck type.

I ended up getting another pair of shooties in black! Anyone else out there a shootie lover?

Another Rule Broken

Just a few notes here; I've had to wear my glasses due to allergies (ugh), the funny look of my legs are my fishnets, and this is my new bag, (Patti)! You can't tell, but it is copper colored, has all the pockets and organizers I love, and an adjustable strap. Great feeling leather. Love it. Had to take a pic with my bag on--I mean this is what I look like most of the time!

Making it Work

Ya know when all the stars line up and you get your Kate-Moss-I-just-slipped-on-this-dress moment? It seems to happen to me in this dress. It's just so easy to fall into my artsy/chic style and feel great. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with my other purchases this season~

Cases in point: The I-thought-this-would-work-as-a-vest-shirt, the cowgirl-esque silk fuchsia fun blouse, and the New-New Look peplum top. Just meh. Nothing like I envisioned any of these. Yet, hope springs eternal~

Maybe with a few tweaks, I can make these work.

Partying and Polka-dots

My dirty little secret to being visible? I'm sporting PURPLE lipstick. Yup, you heard me. Purple. Now just bear with me--it actually works. Not as some funky, weird, not-human type of lip color but as a HUMAN pink that stains my lips and stays with me all day! Who would have thought?

Lee Miller Portrait by Man Ray (solarization)

I went to a great exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum on Man Ray and Lee Miller. I decided to go to get inspired as I just started taking a photography course. Of course, now I am obsessed~

I got all the books at the library on both of them. I am particularly taken with the process Man Ray developed that he called "solarization"; it gives a sooty outline to the subjects (as in the photo of Lee). I love manipulating photos and am jealous of the apple app called "instagram" that all the fashion photographers were using during fashion week.

I'm sharing this with you because I'm hoping to improve my photos for my blog. Right now I have a very inexpensive camera (Samsung TL205) and may find I may need to upgrade to improve my photos. I don't know enough about what cameras have to offer to know whether or not I NEED a new camera or if I can just improve my knowledge and get better photos.

In the morning before work, I spend all of 5 minutes taking my outfit shots. I may take 3-5 pictures and use a tripod. I run around my yard looking for the best light but I don't always get the colors right. My indoor photos are really boring--not like some of the photos I see in the Anthropologie catalog! (my inspiration)

Sometimes I think I become TOO visible (segue here to Not Dead Yet Style and Visible Mondays). I go too far. I have fun while doing it though, and I don't know I've gone too far until I walk the mall. (or any public place for that matter!)

This outfit started out with the inspiration of the cinched waist and a full skirt--al-la the New New Look. I bought this second hand silk blouse and ripped off the collar and sewed up the back. It has great details and love the peplum.

I felt great when I left the house, but BOY, did I get horrification looks when I went to the mall! I asked myself--where did I go wrong?

Abstraction no. nine-one-six

So I abstracted myself in a sketching. And I could see I had a lot going on. Too much pattern and texture. Bit of a hot mess. I am going to try take two.

I did get a lot of compliments on my triple-layered necklace though!

You may remember one of my favorite trends for this season is the cinched waist and full skirt of Dior's New New Look. I found this dress at one of my favorite thrift spots and after a few minor alterations, whala! Dior--revisited. The dress is not actually vintage though; the tags inside are modern.

The shoes modernize it a bit. And can you believe I am almost lacking in any color???? Take note of my earrings though--they are a bright blue.

And my honking big belt! It has to be around 20 years old--I'm so glad I saved it.

Over-50 Mini-skirters Vindicated!

I am so jazzed! Yes, it's true--the over-40 (and over-50) mini-skirters have been vindicated by a Lucky Mag staffer--Jean Godfrey June! After being asked, "..over 40, how short can dresses and shorts be? in her "Dear Lucky" column, she answers, ..."Sixty-year-olds with great legs should most definitely wear short skirts! (Hello, Tina Turner!)".... And how perfect is this for "Visible Monday"?

Her answer to the question gives a lot more great advice--unfortunately there is no link to the article, but its' on page 44 of the October Issue. I felt empowered after I read her response and I am already thinking of the stockings and sweater I can wear with my favorite mini of the summer!

Oh, what qualifies my mini's above? I gauged them at more than 1" above the knee--not a mini by a twenty-year-old's standard, but enough for me!

How do you feel about being cute? Is cute a bad word for those of us over a certain age? Should it be reserved for those under 10? I'm mentioning it because this is a CUTE sundress.

It's probably these little embroidered flowers that really punch up the cute vibe. And today, I am embracing the cute in me. I guess it's one facet of my personality--not the majority of my style, but a piece of it. I do remember those days when all I wanted to be was sexy....those days are few and far between....

I've worn this dress for different occasions; out to eat (bottom photo), work (top photo). In the work version, I funked it out a bit with the jacket and the shoes--more my style.

Repeats

Repeats. As a fashion blogger, they are hard to avoid. To keep it interesting, I know I think about repeating the same outfit. And really, I can't avoid repeating because in real life we wear the same clothes over and over again. Unless, of course, you have a money tree in your backyard.

I wear this skirt for 3 seasons, so it gets a lot of companions.

Most of the time, I always want to change my "repeats" just enough so they are not exactly the same. I like the creative process of looking at my clothing in another way.

This was my favorite shirt this season; just a simple chambray--goes with most.

Sometimes though, I wear the outfit the exact same way every time. Because it is perfection.

My Blue Period

Hey, Picasso had his blue period and I guess I'm having mine. I don't know if it was the toe nail polish or what, but I'm doing a lot of blue! Denim, that is. I've been further inspired by the trend of mixing different denims (Reva of Revasrags2roses has this trend on her great post the other day of current trends that you can see here). And wearing jeans is sometimes all about the backside, no?

Trends. Half of the time I can't remember whether something is IN or OUT now--I've guess I've just gone through so many TRENDS. Was it this season or last season that LEOPARD was in? Fashion trends change so quickly now, that its really hard for ~~a women my age~~ anyone to keep up. I do remember though, that the mixing pattern thing was a trend this year, and I have enjoyed it. And I think it's a trend that makes me visible, so here I am again enjoying Visible Mondays--with thanks to Patti over at Not Dead Yet Style.

I still watch the trends tho. Hey, I don't want to be TOTALLY out of it. I am compiling my info now and have chosen a few that I know I like; and one I don't like.

I am loving the peplum look and am crafting one presently from a thrift store find . It's a look that is classic, and it flatters a women's figure. It's always in style--as far as I'm concerned. The peplum I am working on is a fall color though, and not quite ready for postings YET!

Here is a look that would be EASY for me to do, but sorry, I am not going to look like a little old lady any more than I have to. (PS. LOVE the rest of Marc Jacobs polka-dot thing this season). This picture is one of the reasons why fashion is just crazy sometimes. Could make us all victims.

before--I'm an old hippie at heart. Those anti-establishment ideals are tough to kill off. And I'm all about low maintenance.

Bed Jackets and Boleros

Some things are meant to be seen on Visible Mondays over at Not Dead Yet Style. (I finally did it Patti!) But some things, like my upper arms, should not--and that's why I'm always looking for creative ways to hide them. For that purpose, I have had a lot of success with bed jackets and boleros.

Remember bed jackets? I mean the recent kind; not the 18th century kind (more here) which were more like aprons. The one on the left is from Victoria's Secret from about 15 years ago. Not quite vintage, but there are great vintage versions too.

And I love boleros--new ones or vintage styles. Couture Allure Vintage Fashion Blog did a great job with some gorgeous 50's boleros the other day. (you can see them here). This one that I am wearing (on the right) is from Talbot's; I wear it frequently but the only drawback? I SEE LOTS OF THEM!!!!

Ah, the Mixing thing again

I was watching an old Lon Chaney silent movie the other night, Mr. Wu, and he was sporting a Kimono made of mixed patterns. That film was from 1923. As I suspected, mixing patterns is nothing new. I've been trying to understand a formula for success in this tricky trend, and have yet to come up with one. Sometimes it helps to see it from another time perspective--so I've been looking for it in movies, books--whatever. "Crazy quilt" patterns employ mixed prints-- as with many artistic quilts today. What's the trick? Again, it's a thread that may tie the patterns together; but sometimes it's darn hard to figure out what those threads are--as in the two above. What would be your guesses as to why they work or don't?

Finding Inspiration

On my days off, I have been going to a small coastal town to "get away" and recharge for a day. In the summer, the little town of Rockport turns into an artist's community and I love to visit the galleries for inspiration. Two of my favorite places on this visit were the Mercury Gallery and the Tusinski Gallery. Both gave me inspirations for my Christmas cards (that I am making now--and I'm not saying na-na I started my christmas stuff--I just need to start early so I enjoy it) and a whole new perspective.

And of course, there is the shopping! I managed to snatch a bargain at one of my favorite second hand stores and --and a few alterations later, I have something for my fall wardrobe! More on that later. I have had great luck with dresses this year, and this casual one above is one of my gems.

Of course, I would like to take the hem up just a little......(oh, on my dress--not on the manikin--she's perfect!)

The Sweater Story

Once upon a time, Paula from Fashion over Fifty bought a sweater at Marshall's. She thought it would be perfect for the summer--a short sleeved, linen, neutral cardigan for $19.99. There was just one problem: it was 2 sizes too big. Paula thought it was no big deal--it would be roomy.

It seemed that no matter how she styled this sweater for work, it always looked sloppy.Too bad she didn't listen to her own buying guidelines--the Four Fits. (you can see the guidelines here) She would not have made this mistake.

How was she able to remedy this problem? Paula decided to relegate this sweater to her more casual wear and whala! It seems to work now!

The moral of the story? BUY THINGS THAT FIT, PAULA!

The House Dress

I've been thinking about casual dressing lately and recently I read a great blog on retirement dressing that you can read here. I'm all about looking good while just hanging out--mainly for me it's a chance everyday to indulge my creative side.

And I discovered the new version of the house dress--the picture on the left. My mother in law wore house dresses. Do you remember them? They looked like an apron sort of--changed into a dress. You could find them at K-Mart for under 5 bucks. Not a bad idea really, I mean, it was a dress--though not the Mrs. Cleaver type but a dress non-the-less. My version is the not-fitted-well-enough-to-go-public dress relegated to it's new position. Key for this look? The dress MUST have pockets!

Skirts are a good alternative to to wear for play clothes--the picture on the right. Jean skirts work well for this and the shirt? It's a tie-dye throw-back from the 70's that only my backyard will probably see!

Summer Hats

Summer hats. One false move, and they can be very lol. (little old lady) I think some bold sunglasses can really help wash that ol' lady out--agree?

I love hats--and I really need to wear them in the summer. My hair is very thin, and my scalp gets sunburned! Course, I don't have a collection as extensive as Judith over at Style Crone. She is the guru of hats--but I know we both share our LOVE of hats.

All of my hats I need to sew ties onto--it's regularly pretty windy here so my hat needs to stay ON! The first hat on the left is a find at Marshall's; it's great 'cuz you can crush it in a suitcase and it bounces back! The middle one my husband calls my Daktari hat--remember the series Daktari about a safari eons ago? Well, that hat I bought at a boating store and I love it because of the tie. And its cotton. oh, and it has snaps on the brim. Very Daktari. And the last one is a recent purchase from a trunk show from an exclusive second hand store in Boston. It says, "Bonwit Teller" on the inside, and the ribbon is velvet. I get more compliments on it! Small version of a rice paddy hat.

I never wear baseball caps--they look AWFUL on me.

I had to try this hat on during a recent visit to Martha's Vineyard.

I passed on it. So Carmen Miranda and maybe a little flying nun too--don't you think?

Jewelry Swap

When Pam over at Over50feeling40 decided to do a jewelry swap; I said, "sure, why not!" This piece of jewelry is from Debbie over at Boopnut.

I actually flipped the disk over and found it was made on mother-of-pearl. I liked that side better and used it instead. I don't usually wear necklaces; earrings are my thing--but this was a nice change. It's good to get out of your comfort zone. Thanks Debbie!

I paired the necklace with a casual outfit--I'm thinking of posting more casual outfits for all of us baby boomers now partially retired or retired--or just working part time. Sometimes its more difficult to find casual clothes than work clothes! This look of a tunic top and capris works great for me.

A Year of Blogging: A Retrospective

About a year ago, this was one of my first outfit post pictures. I was taking pictures with my phone at that time, and for some reason, I always had this confused look on my face.

The backgrounds have changed, I've put on a few pounds and sported a few more wrinkles. Blogging hasn't been what I thought it would be. Back then, I thought I would make zillions of dollars by blogging and would be featured on Oprah's show for having one of the most ground-breaking over-fifty blog sites. lol.

I've re-assessed my blogging goals--now that Oprah doesn't want me--and over the next year I hope to:

Improve on my photography; maybe do a video.

Share some more artwork with you

Hey, everyone has a bad hair day....

And continue to share my passion for fashion with all the friends I make through blogging.

The Four Fits

Well, I'm back from fishing. Didn't catch any big ones, but it was sure relaxing! Hope all of you are enjoying the summer; it's so short here in NE--we must take advantage of it every second~

This post is in answer to Pam, over at over50feeling40. She asked her readers what our shopping guidelines were, and with some thought I came up with mine. I call them the "Four Fits":

1. The item must FIT in my closet. And I mean fit as in fill in a gap, or fill a need. I constantly shop my closet to determine how I might freshen my old clothes, or how I might incorporate something new into it. Any new item replaces and old--and out it goes. I try anyway.

2. The new item must FIT me physically. The dresses above are good examples of a good fit. This empire waist or fitted waist works so well for me, I usually always buy this style. It helps to know what fits YOU the best.

3. It must FIT my style and my personality. Course, that may change like the wind. And who knows; I may feel like being someone else for a day. I have a wide berth here!

4. It must FIT my budget. I use $50.00 as a gauge; under I am golden--over? Better think about it.

I still haven't gotten it right for Everybody Everywhere. I'm always a day late and a dollar short. But I had to at least give it a try--YELLOW IS MY FAVORITE COLOR!!!! I have so much yellow, I had to choose between many pictures for this post.

I have my wig piece on today--it's becoming a staple of my summer wardrobe. With my thin hair and hot weather, I look like a drowned rat within no time. The curly pony-tail (that you can't see) is better than my hair could ever be!

I believe there is a yellow for everyone--do you?

And with my new passion for print-mixing, like I said, this task was easy!

French Dressing

Pam over at over50feeling40 and I read the book by Ines de la Fressange, Parisian Chic and we decided to have some discussion questions for each other and post an outfit with French dressing in mind. Sort of like Book Club-a-la-Blog. I’ve always been fascinated by French dressing—hey who hasn’t? And as part of my heritage is French, I’m always hoping somehow I can find out what their secret is to looking great.

To give you a little overview, “Parisian chic” is offbeat chic. Chic being quality, classic clothes and offbeat is the mixing of casual with dressy--expensive with not-so-much. It’s a great way to extend your wardrobe. I had a bit of trouble as my wardrobe is full of things the french aren't too keen on. Prints. Bright colors. Leggings. Mini-skirts. I put together a black skirt--probably a staple in the french wardrobe. A luxury fabric silk top. And the quirky part? Flat sandals with a straight skirt. Oh, and boleros for those over fifty are a no-no too. oopsey.

So the questions~

1. Ines writes that a Parisian, "seeks chic and demands quality. Her definition of luxury? A brand that guarantees good taste, rather than an all to obvious price tag." Do you agree?

Absolutely agree! I wonder if people even know how to look for quality now—most people here buy for a name or a price, without knowing why. I love that Ines’s idea of French style is never to display too much bling. Just real, genuine quality. I think we should all have a few items in our wardrobe of true quality.

2. Please tell us a couple of things you do not see yourself ever doing.

She recommends shoes styles—ballet flats, black heels, riding boots, and loafers—don’t get the loafers. Way too conservative for me.

And then there is the mini-skirt thing. She feels, as most stylists feel, that women shouldn’t wear mini-skirts over a certain age. No mutton as lamb—as she says. And I break THAT rule. Oh, and there is a no-no for neon colors. OOPS again. And leggings are out, according to Ines—and they are an intregal part of my wardrobe. So, for now, I don’t see myself not breaking those rules.

3. Do you have the magnificent seven in your wardrobe? Do you see yourself making this happen if it does not already exist?

Magnificent seven are: man’s blazer, trench coat, navy sweater, tank top, little black dress, jeans and a leather jacket.

I do have the magnificent seven. Actually, duplicates of the magnificent seven. With one possible exception—the little black dress. Its not black.

4. You are a pretty colorful lady...what do you think about the idea that she mostly is promoting the neutrals...black, gray, white, khaki, and navy?

I understand that the French want that classic yet quirky style—and quirky is not wild colors. But that concept is very practical and neutral colors provides many combinations. But for me? No, too many neutrals and I die inside. Could not just stick to neutrals.

5. What do your perfect jeans look like?

When I traveled to Europe back 30 years ago, there I was in my baggy, sloppy, hippie jeans and the French girls were looking oh-so-sexy in theirs. Now, my perfect jeans are better fitting. I go for a high rise and either skinny or boot-cut legs. I only do denim. Ines says the French way is to have jeans also in black and white. White--no--black--maybe.

All in all I think its a great book--it gives you insight into Frennch dressing, shopping and home decor. I think her guidlines are sound and easy to understand. What did I find most valuable? Parisians feel they will never go out of style. I like that attitude!

The Elusive Item

I just finished reading "Bringing Home the Birkin" by Michael Tonello and just as he was chasing an elusive item, the Birkin bag, I have also been chasing an ellusive item. For me it was this chambray shirt. Can you believe it? I have had this item on my list since the early spring. I thought it would be easy to find at a thrift store, but it took me a few months to finally snag one that worked. And I had all these ideas of altering it--but its really perfect the way it is.

Love the details on this skirt too. There are actually small beads around the cut-outs that are slowly falling off. I don't wear white jeans as a rule, but a white skirt works almost as well. And this is about as classic a look as you can get out of me.

The book is a hoot! Jill over at Everything Just So recommended it, and so do I.

More on My Earring Obsession

Because of my earring obsession, I try and recycle/re-use/re-purpose WHENEVER I can. Any bracelets, old earrings or necklaces I may cut up and re-use the beads, gems or stones for my earrings. I have a box of goodies that helps me complete this task--tools of the trade, as it were.

I start with some basic hoops to dangle my new creations from. Sometimes I just buy beads from the bead store and hang them on my hoops. Other times, I get more creative and create a dangly thingy.

Today, I just used a small hoop and tied it with ribbon to the wooden bead. The ribbon worked OK, but for the other danglies, I'll find a more suitable ribbon/thread/yarn.

Crotchet hook helps to tie the ribbon.

Last week I strung some old beads on the rods and then created a circle on the end of the rod to hook onto my hoop. The crimper helps for that--

the last ones on the bottom right are my "Zulu" earrings. The orange piece is coral.

When you buy beads for hoops though, make sure the hole in the bead is the correct size. I have bought many a bead that wouldn't fit on my hoop.

No Make-up Days

Do you almost have just as much trouble dressing for chillaxing as you do for work/parties? (My girlfriend used to call them the "no make-up days".) The chillin' wardrobe for the over-fiftier can really make me feel old. With shorts very limited, and not quite ready for house-dress material, dressing for at-home can be a struggle.

But when you love clothes as much as I do, and love the creative process of getting dressed, I make an effort to look good even when I'm just hanging around. (Course I may run a few errands too!) What works for me many times, is a tunic and leggings. Here where the average temp is 55, this works well. And I can adapt my leggings to warmer/colder weather by shortening or bulking up on them.

An Over-fifty Interpretation

I was inspired for my outfit today from Lucky Magazine. Oh, I know what some of you are saying, it's cheating or that's copying or that's not creative. Well, for those of us over fifty--it IS creative, because we must adapt what the 20 year old model is wearing to us. And let me tell you, it's not easy.

This look was called skirts and sneakers but what I liked MOST is the striped shirt and the flowey skirt. The instructions were to have a mini, flowey, bright colored skirt, large striped top, and sneakers that aren't too athletic.

I opted out of the sneakers as I was going to work--but I could do that another time. I wore sandals to further the casual look. The shirt was a bit TOO oversize, so I tied it with a ring. The skirt was the flowey type but not as short as the model's (as much as you know I like minis). My skirt isn't as bright either, but I think it works.

Do we have a successful over-fifty interpretation of a look or what?

I'm a non-conformist. (dUH, Paula!) The reason why I say this is because now that not matching colors is what's vogue; today I'm matchy-matchy. I even matched the circles in my skirt with the circles in my shirt. And I matched my earrings!

A New Workhorse

It's funny how sometimes I'm just about ready to toss an item, like this vest, and by chance gets to live another day. As destiny would have it, this little item is fast becoming a workhorse in my spring/summer wardrobe this year. I can't believe how many times I have added it to an outfit at the last minute. And to think it almost was on the chopping block.......

To give you a little history: This "vest" originally was a jacket. I chopped off the sleeves-- above is the vest last year. After a few renditions of it, I think I mentioned on my blog that I was unhappy with the way it turned out. But I couldn't figure out WHAT THE HECK was wrong with it. Well, thank God for the brilliance of my blogger friend, Serene over at The Elegant Bohemian, who noticed the shoulders were still too long. I trimmed them up this year--and whala! This season's new workhorse was born!

Wigs

I like wigs. I've liked them since high school. Mainly because I have crappy hair. They are great for a bad hair day too, or on the boat or after a work-out. This is my newest wig--looks very strange not attached:

It has 2 wires that wrap around the comb that you put into a ponytail. I love these clip on type wigs--they aren't itchy like a full wig. I have a couple of other ones:

Looks a bit like furry pets, no? But these were a bit heavy to wear--by the end of the day, I'd have a headache. You can probably see part of the clip on one.

There have been a lot of wigs in my life. In high school it was the "fall"--it had a headband, and long, flowy hair. Then there were these cute little short hair wigs that we all wore because we all had long hair. And my love for wigs continued into my adult life.....with many more variations.

There has been some discussion lately from Patti over at Not Dead Yet Style on the invisibility of women over fifty. While I am not generally an invisible person, I know what she means. Most of the advertisers choose to forget about us--even though we are a significant income pool. Magazines focus on the young and sometimes it seems we are just forgotten.

Rather than feeling helpless about this conundrum, I decided I would do my part to keep others my age from slipping into invisibility. Whenever I see a person my age or older that looks particularly good that day, I make sure I compliment them. One day it was at a graduation. An older women had her hair done in this absolutely perfect bun. I was fascinated by her hair. She had this adorable, sequined pink shawl and coordinated pink dress. I cut my way through the crowd and told her she looked lovely. In the mass of graduates and parents, I think I made a grandmother feel a little less invisible that day.

One Accessory

I try and live the simple life--I really do. I do yoga, appreciate nature, and try and not make too many demands on the environment. Somehow though, try as I may, fashion always seems to put a crimp in my keeping-it-simple.

For example, I pride myself in keeping my accessories to a minimum. I really just wear earrings. No necklaces, no watches, no bracelets. I use one bag till it wears out. This one accessory thing really helps getting ready in the morning.

The problem is, I think it has become an excuse for an obsession. And I think I'm simplifying! Who am I kidding! I just keep on buying earrings!

Mini-Skirts Over Fifty

I am one of those people who breaks a cardinal rule of fashion: No mini skirts over fifty. (well, could be thirty-five--I don't have the actual rule book.)

From the back, low on the horrification scale.

But Sherry at Girls Day Out looked through my blog and couldn't find me in my minis. That's probably because I take most of my blog pictures for work and I wear my minis for casual wear. So even though I break the rules, I do have some guidelines; no minis at work, no minis where there are lots of girls are younger than me, and keep it to friends and family--so as not to horrify too many people.

Why do I wear mini skirts you ask? Because I love them. Just one of those fashions I can't give up. And the legs ARE the last to go--and mine aren't so bad. Got to accentuate the positive.

And when people have that look of horrification on their face when they see my short skirt, maybe somewhere an over-fiftier will look at me and say to themselves, ..."hey, if she can do it.....". It may not be a mini-skirt, but maybe it'll provoke some thought and courage for them to wear that orange, sleeveless blouse, or wear those shorts, or maybe even a backless dress. You can do it--I know you can.

Shorts, Shorts, Shorts. They are everywhere this year. Too bad many of them are 2" inseams. Not for us over 50er's, that's for sure! Over at Pam's, over50feeling40, there were many women who commented the other day that they don't wear shorts anymore. I was the same. That's sort of sad. I don't like not being able to wear something.

I vowed this year I would somehow work shorts into my wardrobe. I found these at a thrift store; they are White Stag. They were capris with a weird shape, so I hacked off a lot and then hemmed them. My vision was to pair them with a lacy bohemian top--too bad this Michael Kors one (that I USED to love) makes me look preggers now. That'll be in the second hand pile today! I will try another white one next time.

I love the look of the longer walking shorts with wedge shoes--it gives the shorts a new look. Not so I-just-got-off-the-golf-course-look. Shorts for the over50 set? Walking shorts is the way to go~agree?

Sick-of-Myself-Bloggin'-Blues

I was getting tired of the same old photos--so I decided to take my camera into work. I was hoping it might get me out of the I'm -sick-of-myself bloggin' blues.

Hence the little hiatus last week. I was looking for inspiration. I found some color inspiration from my recent annual plantings; I'm going with a purple, orange and lime green theme. So I found the lime green jacket, much purple in the shirt but alas, I am lacking in the orange.

Do you ever get tired of yourself? Just need a change? That's when I sit back and take stock. Haul out my inspiring books or magazines or enjoy nature. I'm feeling better now.

On Pattern Mixing

All last week, I experimented with pattern mixing. There are many rules to follow, such as, similar size, same color group, follow a thread, etc., but I found the rules didn't necessarily work as I thought they would. It was strictly trial and error.

Here I thought that the black would give it continuity, and the repetitive polka dot would be a "rest" to the artistic pattern of the sweater. Still way too much going on.

Next up, I tried the same color group with two different sized prints. Better here, but still a lot going on. At the end of the day, I liked this-- but wasn't IN LOVE.

This time, I used the same color group and used a small print with a large one. Success! I was still lovin' this at the end of the day.

So what did I learn? It's really a lot of trial and error, but for me, working in a simple color group worked the best. Small prints are easier than large ones. Think of quilts.

I know some of you are trying this. It can breath fresh air into your wardrobe and extend your closet. What have you found?

Gauge of Horrification at the Post Office

While I'm getting dressed in the morning, I am sometimes thinking of the gauge of horrification I may encounter at the Post Office. It may be as high as a 10 on those days I decide to toss aside all reason--and really dress wildly. Other days I may sneak in and out without so much as scoring a 1.

This day I knew I would score at least a 5. The shoes were worth a 3, and the fact that I was not dressing my age (whatever THAT is), I could tack on another 2. This was further emphasized when I encountered yet more strange looks later at the mall. Meanwhile, I was very comfortable in this get-up. And I was very proud of myself that I was able to utilize this top I had originally bought for a beach cover-up. I liked the neck detail so much I didn't want to get rid of it!

Change it Up!

I was inspired by a few bloggers last week to get out of my uniform rut. As I looked through Terri's and V's month in review, I realised I've been wearing LOTS of skirts and jackets the past months. And while this works well for me, I've just got to shake it up a bit every now and then.

Not that this is radical, or anything. It's a dress with a cardigan--for a slight change. I am not a cardigan over dress fan; harkens back to a day when all had our ratty cardigans hanging on the back of the chairs at the office- to don when cold. Could be a little old lady.

Do love this dress! It was such a steal at Target--it's a Proenza Schouler --all silk--$39.99. Check out the stitching detail on the sash.

Mint Juleps, Kentucky Derby and Hats

Some friends of ours have a Kentucky Derby party every year. The best part about this party is not so much the race, but the mint juleps! Marinated for days before the party, they are authentic and are served in these silver cups. We even drink with gloves to keep the frost on the cup.

Hats were plentiful this year; we attributed that to the Royal Wedding. There were some fascinators, lots of wide brims, and if you look close enough, "my little ponies".

Course, being the artist I am, I had to make mine. I was inspired by Princess Beatrice, the queen, Philip Treacy and mint juleps.

Anyone else out there a mint julep fan?

Wicked Witch Shoes?

Sadly, my magnolia tree has stopped blooming~the petals are on the ground. These were taken in its glory--and this picture, a couple of days before its glory.

Yes, ladies, it's still cold (50) here in NE, and that IS a sweater AND a jacket--and I probably still had long underwear on. But the real burning question here is: WHAT ABOUT THESE SHOES?

I was totally in love with them until one day at the airport , I overheard a guy on a phone saying, ..."just saw the ugliest shoes ever. Definitely, wicked witch shoes." HMM, I thought to myself, could he be talking about MY shoes? They are sort of wicked-witchy. They are slip on, though with a cute buckle BUT I haven't worn much of them since this incident..so I ask you, wicked witch or not?

Fishnets and Cherry Blossoms

Sorry, peeps....but the house is to go on the market--and I haven't had enough time for posting! Just bear with me for a bit!

Springtime is a great time for fishnet stockings, I have found. Its not quite warm enough to go bare legged, and too warm for opaque tights. They are a great solution to the hairy leg in the summer also.

I have quite a collection; this is really only half. Retail stores regularly supply them now, but years ago, the only place I could find them was Frederick's of Hollywood.

I've always abhorred nylons, so this is a good alternative. There was a time when you had to wear stockings to work. At least those days are gone!

Any other fishnet wearers out there? Or, who remembers the days when stockings were dress code?

Back to the meat of my blog today. Hate to go on so, but I am still on this thing about "what makes you look old". While pondering this question, beside me was the Vermont Country Store Catalog. Since buying my wool, lace-like stockings from them, (last seen here) I have been on their mailing list.

And I have to say, it's almost a bible for what NOT TO WEAR--unless you want to look dated and old. There are almost five pages on muumuu's, an assortment of pull on pants, perfumes from the 1920's (so you can smell old too); but my FAVORITE?

Yup, that's right ladies--TIRED OLD ASS SOAK. Otherwise known as TOA. Sort-of sounds good. I wonder if it'll work in my hot tub?

Don't you just love it when someone provokes thought? Well, that's what Terri over at Rags against the Machine continually does. Last week she asked her followers what it was about dressing that may make us feel old.

And while I have a litany of items that can make me look old, (and the list grows daily) I had remembered I had taken these buttons off this cute, vintage style, Tahari jacket because it sort of made this jacket look, well...a little old lady.

The Meaning of Life--er sort of.

Have I told you I am a bit of an old movie aficionado? I was watching The Razors Edge the other night with Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney--which is a movie about the meaning of life. And after I was reading blogs the other night, I began to ask what is meaning of life? Well, with respect to the blogisphere, that is!

Every now and then, I guess, I become somewhat retrospective and ask, what am I doing here? I read my friends blogs--some are great writers, some great photographers, some very funny, some are good at baring their soul and still others are great poets. I have to wonder: Where do I fit in in the mix?

It always seem to come back to this: I really want to inspire women my age to have fun dressing. So many of my friends have lost interest. I can't blame them--it's hard to shop at our age. There are a lot of things working against us--our bodies are changing, styles are catered to girls half our age, things don't fit right--I could go on and on.

This spot I chose because the only other flowers that are blooming in my yard are here!

Yet, everyday I am inspired by the things around me, whether it is art, flowers, other bloggers, fashion magazines--it gives me that little joy in life that partly makes me feel young again, but more importantly, makes me happy and fulfilled.

Daffodils and Shooties

I know you have been here before: styling dilemma. And I was so excited about these shoes yet the vision didn't match up with reality! (The gods of the low-heeled shooties answered my prayers). There I was, running late--searching for the combination for my new shooties.

Shooties; cage sandals--whatever..~Designer Wearhouse, $35

The dilemma played out as follows: tried white socks, cut white socks, white socks didn't work. Couldn't wear tights--had decided to wear bare legs. Tried fish-nets with longer, capri pants. Looked like a can-can dancer from a Toulouse-Lautrec painting. Took off longer capri pants. Finally tried this combo--and with no time left--had to go with it. Felt a little like a boxer though....

At the end of the day, I love my new shooties--very comfortable heel--but I FROZE!!! It only got up to about 42~ugh--and with my bare legs!

But the original inspiration for the outfit (bare legs and yellow shrug) came from my daffodils. They have finally risen.

Not a Maxi

Although there are a few reasons to wear a longer dress--hairy legs or cold weather--they are not one of my favorites. Since Everybody, Everywhere is doing maxis, of course that was all I could think of this morning while I was getting dressed! And with the nor'easter blowing in, I thought I'd dig this skirt out of my closet.

As my skirt is not technically a maxi, this tea-length presents it's own problems for me. The only way I can wear it is with boots, and the cowboy boots, err, well, just would have made it look too western--too hoedown. My only choice was the heeled boots; oh the pain.

The only thing I'm really feeling here (nostalga) is this neckerchief that dates back to before high school~ an Oscar de la Renta--how do you like that? The skirt? Save it for another rainy day.

Mud Season = Clogs

Yup, its mud season here in the NE and ya know what that means? CLOGS! Hate to keep beating a dead horse here, but they are the most practical shoe for our muddy spring here.

I discovered this gem of information during the spectatorship of my son's sports--having to schlep to the field made a practical shoe imperative. Clogs fit the bill because the platform sole keeps you high and dry and the leather is usually durable. Something our ancestors discovered years ago. Clogs kept the wearer out of the mud, and whatever other debris there was on the road.

Of course, any platform shoe will do the same thing, but clogs tend to be more utilitarian in their style. The tricky thing is not getting them TOO utilitarian looking! Otherwise, I may look like I am tending sheep on the Swedish countryside. The best clogs are the ones that are more refined--less clumsy looking. And the wooden soles? They may be too hard on my feet--so I look for something softer.

Any other shoe solutions to mud season?

Prayer to the Gods of Low-heeled Boots

In this week's sketches, I was inspired to mix some of my summer clothes with my winter ones for a Spring look. I've done this in season's past, and I try and combine DIFFERENT outfits from my newest acquisitions.

One of these combos started with my dyed sun-dress from last summer--a re-thrift. It has the potential of working in a spring re-mix because this is a fairly substantial knit--which I think makes the summer components work. The jacket is a wool boucle, designer sample size I nabbed at a discount store. I did need some warmth underneath, and so my trusty body suit helped on that note.

The boots? I decided they needed an update. They stay in my wardrobe because they have a comfortable heel at about 2". After work, I searched for a black shootie with a nice, small heel. Do you think that is possible? Maybe...but unlikely. What is up with these 5" HEELS OUT THERE??? SERENE???? Please help--gods of the low-heeled boots...

Darn Moths

Do you ever wonder how and when those moths get into your wool sweaters? I mean, when does this go on? I see moths around our lights outside, but I never see them in my closet. Anyway, those pesky insects made petite holes in this sweater!

I still love this sweater and was very bummed when I found the holes. Even though this sweater is about 10 years old, other than the holes, its still in pretty good shape.

So when I got home from work, I darned my sweater. Yup, DARN, you heard me correctly. Does that date me or what? Darning works best on knitted things, and I must say, it looks as good as new! Anybody else out there DARN LATELY???

Art as Fashion

I've found that trying to mix art with fashion is a tricky business. Its either too much art, and not enough tailoring; or too much tailoring and not enough art.

This jacket is no exception. I've had this gorgeous artful jacket for about 15 years and have attempted many times to style it--many times unsuccessfully. This is about as good as it gets.

The material looks like a watercolor painting. It's silk (my favorite!), it has raglan sleeves with the orange peplum. I bought it second-hand and just can't part with it. Whenever I wear it though, it reminds my of one of my most inspirational books, When Art Became Fashion; about Japanese kosodes (similar to kimonos) and their artwork.

Freak Fest 101

I know I'm probably a bit of a freak. The reason why I say this? These are my thoughts on getting ready this morning:

For stripe week start with black and white stripe top

Looks good with hot pink sweater (?)

Black skirt? Too much black (?)

Striped skirt? Too conservative (?)

Find print skirt---found black silk with blue and green (does this go with pink sweater?)

Lace tights--sick of thick tights (lace tights with all this other stuff going on?)

Better wear high boots--cold out

oops, cant see pink sweater under jacket

ok--so I'll just belt it and open it up and make some lapels

whala!

Not your average ideas of what-goes-with-what. I know, I'm crazy--bit of a freak--but if anything, maybe you can learn from me? Maybe the crazy is a little genius sometimes; how good does this jacket look with a belt?

And for an added splash, (like I needed one..) honking big pink hoops.

Cowboy Boots

Cowboy boots are not very popular in New England. Sorry all you cowboys and cowgirls...but here in NE, you see more of the LLBean type boots or snow boots.

And I love cowboy boots! It's such a nice break after wearing much heavier snow boots all winter. Love the heel--low and wide. They are a lot more comfortable than they look. I should have more than 2 pairs in my closet...

The rest of the outfit? This is sort of that head-to-tails jean look. The jean jacket is beautifully tailored from Ann Taylor. The jeans are that funny cropped length; the reason for wearing the boots in the first place. In a last minute flash of genius, I put on this beach tunic top for a bit of the orange.

The heather is the only color in my backyard--at this juncture. Soon the crocuses will be up, then daffodils. Almost spring!

Green and DVF

Having been a child of the sixties, I need many tools to jog my memory nowadays. Sketching is one of those tools-- and when I get one of those visions of the perfect outfit to wear? I like to sketch it so I don't forget.

Since I'm a little bored with my winter clothes, I'm digging in the annals of my closet to discover those unworn clothes that may spark up with a new companion. One of those visions was this forgotten green wrap dress paired with my new blue tunic sweater. (see sketch)

There is a lot I love about the dress; it is a silk knit, I love the print and its the classic wrap shape that allegedly looks good on everybody. But to be frank, I never bonded with the wrap dress thing--it never looked that good on me--not that Diane von Furstenberg isn't a genius--it just doesn't work that well for me!

Overall, meh. At the least, its green for St. Paddy's day!

Color, Comfort and Chanel

Lots of complaining here in the Northeast of how dismal, dull and dreary the landscape is here this time of year. I can't complain really 'cuz I escaped for a while. But I do try and combat the dreary backdrop by infusing as much color as I can in my daily outfits.

And comfort. I just finished reading yet another book on Coco Chanel--and I really do attempt to dress by her philosophy--chic comfort. I think one of the reasons that Americans embraced her is she believed in comfort. And isn't that really the foremost criteria for dressing now? Oh, and pockets. She loved pockets.

So, color, comfort and a little chicness--and hopes for spring.

Kandinsky Sweater

I'm trying to do the Terri pose! (not as cute as Terri, tho)

Early this morning, before I knew about the tsunami in Japan, I was very excited about this post. I will try and rewind myself, and do my best!

First of all, I want to thank Terri over at Rags against the Machine for sending me this gift! A while ago, I had complimented about this sweater on her blog, and what did I receive? THE SWEATER IN THE MAIL! How sweet is that? And I just love it! I'm all excited about all the ways I can style it--but for now I went with my current go-to outfit.

My go-to-outfit-of-the-bottom-half is my jean skirt, brown tights and my fuzzy clogs. Its mud season in here, so need a durable shoe.

This sweater reminds me of Kandinsky--don't you think? Now, I'm not as eloquent as Artfully Awear in describing the artist's style, but I think the shapes and colors are somewhat like his style. Except for the Missoni sleeves.

Crazy Lady

Yup, I'm just a crazy lady today--and this, my first day back at work. When I bought this designer jacket at JC Penny, and I just kept on dreaming about this combination! Go figure. Maybe what influenced this crazy combo is the fact that I didn't want to wear the same old winter clothes again.

Course, maybe I went to far. I'm intrigued at the pattern mixing thing, and debated many times before I left the house this morn if I should go for it. I did.

I do love these stockings tho! They are a dainty, lace stocking that are a combo of merino wool and lycra. So comfortable, yet not so fragile that I worry about them. Perfect for spring. And can you believe I got them at the Vermont Country Store on sale?

Profound Thought~ Flux

Well friends, I'm still alive and back in Boston again. Sorry for the infrequent posts, but I'm in flux now (in a good way). Sometimes life just gets in the way.....

There are a couple of reasons for the flux. Part of the reason is we have decided to sell our "big" house and downsize; that means painting, cleaning and purging. We will be building a smaller cottage here in New England and buying a pied-a-terre in FL. Based on the anticipated craziness, I'm hoping to post at least every 4 days or so--but it may be sort of spazmodic.

The other reason for the flux was the blogging thing. I love so many things about it, but it is a time eater. For the time being, I need to put more of my energy to use in a more practical way. In the end, I decided that I'm not quite ready to give up the blogging yet--I don't feel that its run its course. Afterall, I'll need some time for fun!

Traveling Choices

Versatility is so key, don't you think? Take for example this skirt ~ I can wear almost any color with it, it doesn't take a lot of care and the colors make it feel special. So it's worth more than its' weight in gold for a traveling companion.

This iguana is sporting some of the same colors in my skirt. It must have been mating season. Thank God he didn't mistake me for another iguana. Glad I escaped unscathed.

To Bathing Suit or not to Bathing Suit

While we are on the subject of body image/issues, it always saddens me to hear when women stop wearing a bathing suit. In a perfect world, there shouldn't be any reason why anyone should stop wearing one.

I remember 30 years ago on the Cote d'Azur (aka French Riviera), everyone wore a bikini. It didn't matter what your body type or what your age. (It probably wasn't due to women's lib; the men strutted the beach in their speddo's while their wives tanned their bellies) While this is a refreshing thought, sometimes I think modesty is very chic.

I have been taking notes on the subject (kidding), and in my humble opinion, any cover-up that is water-worthy works. You can find them in the bathing suit section. A tee shirt doesn't work as well. I see many women sporting swimmer shorts over a one-piece, or a swim-dress--and they look great and not old lady. My big thing is a swim skirt. Hey, I get my mini-skirt fix and it covers the real jiggly stuff.

I never thought I'd be wearing this tunic as a beach cover-up--never in a million years. I was concerned back in Mass about having THIS too short with leggings--and lordy, look at me now.

Maybe its the tan.

Do you remember coloring? Well, I still love to color and here in Fl., I made a coloring out of the fabric. Coloring is relaxing, no?

Simple Colors--ya, right

Behind me is the intracoastal. In the morning, there are manatees, and osprey--something we don't have in NE. But we do have blue herons at home--right in my backyard-- that are in abundance down here.

I sort of love the simple colors in this outfit. Well, if you can call fluorescent yellow simple. I guess its the simple colors of the denim and white sneakers--and the neutral of my khaki jacket and THEN the fluorescent yellow.

Just want to give you another present of GREEN.....

Sacrificing Jeans

My new habit is sacrificing my long jeans by cutting them shorter. I'm really pleased with the way these came out. I've beeen seeing a lot of jean shorts and jean capris this season and once I get home, all of my outdated or too short jeans are going on the chopping block.

As luck would have it, there's a TJ's right around the corner from our condo. I found myself there a few times already--this was something from one of those excursions. I've tried to find some second-hand stores down here, but have struck out on that so far. Of course the Mall was easy to find.

And here's a little something for all of you still suffering from winter...Just want to give you all a little taste of flowers....

Too Much Time

Have you ever tried to put your earrings in backwards? I did, and its like rubbing your belly and patting your head--it's a mix-up. (Your saying, boy, she's got too much time on her hands.)

And that may be true, but I did try and do it for a reason--really. My earrings looked better on the backside--and without using my jewelry tools, I put them in backwards. Alas, as fate would have it, none of the pictures of them came out well.

But this one did.

Color! A subject right up my alley. Thanks again to KT at Modlychic for putting this all together! Now for the questions and answers~

1. What color dominates your closet?

All of them!!! All colors are my friends—the brighter and the more varied, the better.

This is just my Florida vacation wardrobe.

2. If money weren't an issue how would you change the color emphasis in your closet?

I really wouldn’t change my color scheme because at this point (lots of Color me Beautiful) I know what colors look good on me. And that is really the most important criteria for dressing with color—what best enhances your skin tone and eyes. Now if retailers offered brighter colors in the winter? I’d love to brighten up my winter wardrobe.

3. What is your mantra about mixing colors?

Have fun and embrace color—be inspired and try something new! Don’t Be afraid~

4. For you, how do you incorporate color into your outfits?

I don’t “incorporate” color, I need to edit color. I need to make sure I’m not a walking color wheel and therefore don’t look like a crazy old lady. Choosing what color to wear on a daily basis comes from an inspiration from nature/art, or a vision that comes to me (which is not like voices….really) or from someone’s outfit.

5. Which blogger(s) do you think do a good job of incorporating color into their wardrobe?

Hate to do this but some people I aspire to: Vanessa at Big Girl, Small Budget, Kasmira at What I Wore Today, Ariel at Artfully Awear, Sheila at Ephemera—they like to push the boundaries of color—and I want to be right there with them!

Tennis Skirt Magic

Isn't it weird that you can go from state to state and have a whole different set of values? Here I am in Florida, and for some reason, you can wear shorter shorts and skirts. Of course the weather plays a part, nonetheless, I see many older women in short shorts and many in short tennis skirts. Everywhere. In public.

My condo sits on the tennis courts, and in my observations (OK, so I'm a nosey neighbor) I see older women of all different shapes and sizes sporting short tennis skirts. Back in Mass. they would be wearing longer shorts. And we have talked about the disconnect thing before--how easily you could make a mistake at our age if your skirt/short was too short. Well, for some reason, make that a tennis skirt, and it looks appropriate! Its like magic! How much do I love this????? Because I really miss my mini-skirts!

Of course, I had to test this theory out for myself. I wore my bathing suit skirt and walked a fifteen minute walk to the beach--something I WOULD NOT DO at home. I would wear something over my skirt. Well, I have to say, I was a bit self-conscious at first, but I'll build up to it. Maybe one day, I'll wear a tennis skirt to the grocery store (like everyone else here!) I'd certainly get my mini-skirt fix then!

OK, so the big question--where you live, is it appropriate at our age (lets say over 45) to wear a tennis skirt (short!) to the grocery store?
